53-foot dry van: dimensions, capacity and what freight it’s best for

September 1, 20266 min readADR Transport team

The 53-foot dry van is the most common trailer in freight between Mexico and the United States. It’s enclosed, protects goods from the weather and fits almost any industrial dock. But before you schedule a shipment, it helps to know how much it really holds and where its limits are.

Approximate 53-foot dry van dimensions

Exact measurements vary by manufacturer, year and wall type, so treat these figures as a general reference:

DimensionFeet and inchesMeters (approx.)
Exterior length53′16.15 m
Interior length52′ 6″ to 52′ 8″16.0 m
Interior width8′ 2″ to 8′ 3″2.49 to 2.51 m
Interior height8′ 10″ to 9′ 2″2.69 to 2.79 m
Usable volume3,800 to 4,000 ft³108 to 113 m³

The rear door opening is usually a bit narrower and lower than the interior. If your freight is bulky, ask for the door opening dimensions before quoting.

How many pallets fit?

With standard 48 × 40 inch pallets loaded two across and not stacked, 26 pallets fit on the floor. If the product and packaging allow double stacking, capacity can double — as long as the weight limit isn’t exceeded.

  • 48 × 40″ pallets two across: 26 floor positions.
  • Euro pallets or other sizes: the count changes; a load plan is worth doing.
  • Floor-loaded cartons: calculate by volume and weight, not positions.

How much weight can it haul?

This is where most mistakes happen. The trailer has plenty of volume, but weight is usually the real limit. On U.S. interstate highways, the general maximum gross vehicle weight for a tractor-trailer is 80,000 pounds (about 36 metric tons) — tractor, trailer, fuel, driver and freight combined. In practice that leaves a payload of roughly 42,000 to 45,000 pounds, depending on the equipment.

In Mexico, maximum weights and dimensions are set by the federal transport standard and depend on vehicle configuration and road type. On a cross-border trip, the most restrictive limit along the route is the one that applies.

Important: staying under the total isn’t enough; axle distribution matters too. Freight concentrated at the nose or tail can exceed an axle limit even when the total is fine.

What freight is a dry van best for?

A dry van is ideal for goods that don’t need temperature control and load from the rear:

  • Manufacturing components and finished goods.
  • Electronics, auto parts and packaged devices.
  • Palletized or bagged raw materials.
  • Consumer and retail goods.
  • Packaging, cardboard and packing materials.

When you need a different trailer

  • Reefer: perishable food, pharmaceuticals or temperature-sensitive products.
  • Flatbed: machinery, steel, structures or freight loaded by crane from the sides.
  • Specialized equipment: oversize loads or freight requiring special permits.

Questions to ask your carrier

  1. What are the interior and door opening dimensions of the assigned trailer?
  2. What is the maximum freight weight accepted on this lane?
  3. Is the floor in good condition and the trailer free of moisture and odors?
  4. Does it have tie-down points or load bars to secure the freight?
